Recycle Bin at Marion Township
The original bin was provided as a service test by Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority.
When they decided the test was over they wanted to increase the price to about $80,000 per year.
The Township found another provider who lasted only a short time until he died.
We then switched to Alchin's at a cost of about $25,000 per year.
Although the service was popular with many residents we encountered several problems.
The amount of non-recyclable material put into the bin resulted in many loads being sent to a landfill.
There is often some material placed on the ground which blows around and makes a mess.
There was only one bin and the time for emptying varied and we had residents coming when the bin was gone.
We have not been successful in getting people to crush plastic bottles before depositing taking up more space in the bin.
We have no way to ensure that only Marion residents are using the bin.
We have made many requests to not deposit material in bags but there are always many bags in the bin.
There have been several people who got stuck when the weather was bad.
The cost of paving a driveway and creating a suitable pad for the bin was excessive.
Residents at the October 10, 2019 meeting stated clearly that they did not want the Township to select the garbage and recycling provider.
